Olin SailBot
During my summer 2011 internship at Olin College, Prof. Andrew Bennett, a.k.a., Drew, had discussed SailBot, a new competitive robotics team. When I got back to Olin it was only natural for me to join up with the team and immerse myself in the various aspects of fabrication of a small robotic sailboat.
During the Spring 2012 semester, I took on the design and fabrication of the sails and masts with two of my classmates. Although we didn't end up fabricating our own sails, the team received lots of help from learning how to sail more efficiently and put together our own masts and rigging with guidance from gurus Harold Youngren, Christopher Miller, and Wick Smith, the team received lots of help from learning how to sail better and put together our own masts and rigging. Wick also kindly donated three sets of sails and carbon tubes so that we could make our own masts and rigging. Thanks to all of their support, we were able to get our boat on the water where it could handle most weather conditions.
The team placed 2nd overall in the 2012 Sailbot Competition! As a result Olin College will hosting the 2013 Sailbot competition in Cape Cod, MA.
